Workshop. openDendro: Advanced Open-source Tools for Dendrochronology and Paleoenvironmental Reconstruction

We will hold a practical, skills-based workshop introducing openDendro -- an open-source framework of the base analytic software tools used in dendrochronology in both the R and Python programming languages. openDendro is a new unified set of tree-ring analysis tools in open-source environments that provides the necessary baseline for dendrochronologists to adopt open-science practices and increase both rigor and transparency in their work. The workshop will lead participants through some of the most common tasks in dendrochronology (including detrending, chronology building, and crossdating) as well as data visualization. All examples and exercises will be presented in both R and Python.

- Additional remarks from the organizer: We are excited that you are planning on participating in the openDendro workshop at AmeriDendro. For the past year, we have been developing openDendro as a home for open-source software tools for dendrochronology. This includes the dplR package in R but also dplPy -- a new suite of tools that run in Python. Our goals for this workshop are to introduce openDendro as a home for open-source computing in dendro, demonstrate new and existing tools, and bring new developers on board with the project.
- We will start with an overview of the project we will have brief tours of the Python and R tools including signal-free standardization. After a break we will have breakout sessions where users can get hands-on experience working with data in either R or Python.
- Attendees who want to work with R and dplR should come to the workshop with a laptop and have both R and Rstudio installed:
- In the workshop we will use the most up-to-date version dplR (v1.7.4) which can be installed by following the instructions here:
- For those attendees who wish to test the current functionality of dplPy, please see the installation instructions here:
- dplPy requires Python v3.8, Pip, and uses a conda environment. Attendees will also be able to test drive the dplPyfunctions in a Google CoLab environment.
