This paper brings the early development of my postdoctoral research, which focuses on dance electronic music scenes, and the means by which women who take part in them professionally – as DJs, music producers and/or event producers – will claim their voices to be heard, along with more visibility and social and business insertion. It specifically seeks to pay attention to Brazilian and Canadian scenes, and the mediations of discursive and material struggles by means of the digital culture. In order to do that three central axes of theoretical background are proposed: a) the concept of music scenes and their virtual dimensions; b) the studies on women in music, specially e-music and c) notions of performance. It is argued that while there is already a bibliography on women’s participation in rock scenes (REYNOLDS; PRESS, 1996; FRITH; MCROBBIE, 2005; GELAIN, 2017), works looking at e-music contexts are scarce. Moreover, while DJ collectives, such as “Girls on Decks” in Canada, and “Bandida Coletivo” in Brazil have similar demands and strategies, they also have specificities that refer to their Global North / South positions. Therefore, it is important to address such differences not in terms of a comparison that puts the Global South in a place of delay or the exotic, but that of the ex-centric (COMAROFF & COMAROFF, 2012), outside Euro-America, with its own particularities. As methodological procedures the principles and techniques of ethnography are evoked, namely the participant observation of environments such as social network sites and blogs, and the use of interviews.
