Academic Work
Ms. Laurents’ MA thesis involved a study of the genesis of the Lost Generation cultural narrative in Britain during the First World War, and of the influence of that narrative on British culture and society in the interwar period. She has continued this investigation in her PhD work and has expanded this work along interdisciplinary lines.
Her current work involves the investigation of the socio-linguistic, sociological, and cultural mechanisms underlying and contributing to the development of the Lost Generation cultural narrative, as well as the propagation of the narrative through literature, historical writing, and various other media (including theatre and film) both during the war and in the interwar period. This investigation includes research into the establishment of an upper class collective identity in Britain and the linkage between that collective identity and the development of the Lost Generation narrative.
