Karen Hoecker-Pérez

Project manager at the Pájarx entre Púas Foundation
Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso (PUCV)
Participates in 1 Session
Karen Hoecker-Pérez is a feminist geographer inclined to territorial studies from a gender perspective. Born in 1997, in Valparaíso, Chile. Inspired by the feminist movement that started in Chile in 2018, she began researching on territorial aspects of feminicides in Chile at a municipal scale, connecting these figures with an analysis of the predominant economic activities in each municipality. The results of this research have been presented as a poster at the Chilean Geographical Society’s annual congress in November 2019. In September 2019, the Research Department of Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso (PUCV) awarded her a research fund for students for her project “The social-spatial dimension of feminicide in Chile”. Based at the Laboratory of Social Geography and Alternative Territories at PUCV’s Institute for Geography and in cooperation with PUCV’s School for Social Work, this financing allowed incorporating additional disciplinary perspectives, as well as new variables and scales into the previous research. In December 2020, she defended her graduate thesis “Atlas of Gender Violence in Chile” at PUCV’s Institute of Geography, with extraordinary success. Since January 2020, she has been part of the research area of the “Colectiva Pájarx entre Púas” Foundation. Karen Hoecker is now preparing for a doctoral thesis and an academic career.
