Maamuitaau means “gather together” in the Cree language. It’s the name we have given to a weekly meeting that brings together all Indigenous students at our CEGEP.  Usually, two Cree elders attend the gathering.  As the person responsible for Indigenous student services, I organize and help facilitate the different activities. Following the opening prayer, we have a sharing circle.  As the students establish connections, bond, and develop a sense of belonging, they get a chance to make their voices heard. As such, the Maamuitaau helps create a sense of cultural safety. The students are regularly asked for their input and participate in the organization of culturally relevant activities. We recently enhanced the Maamuitaau to include workshops focused on winning learning strategies and healthy lifestyle habits. We favour a holistic approach that helps equip our Indigenous students with the right resources to address their self-identified needs.
