- Room 512DH

Presenters: Shirley Tagalik and Kukik Baker,  Aqqiumavvik Society, Arviat, Nunavut , Jrène Rahm, Université de Montréal

In this presentation, the co-authors will share a video on Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit (IQ): What Inuit have always known to be true which was co-created with La Boîte Rouge VIF to offer some insights into a book that was recently translated into French with the same title. Through a brief presentation, we aim to highlight the relevance of IQ for modern everyday challenges that we all face in this world. Through that sharing, we pay particular attention to inunnguiniq – the Inuit perspectives on raising a human being with a good heart which is about being in respectful relationships and implies a lifelong process. This Inuit approach to childbearing and education has many truths to share. Through the video documentary and references to the stories shared in the book by Elders, we aim to align the presentation with the meeting theme of making voices heard that will then help us find our way in terms of restorying education to ensure the resurgence of IQ and Inuit understandings of becoming capable and contributing. Our discussion will be enriched by giving voice to other core cultural principles and beliefs central to inunnguiniq and IQ, as raised by the Elders. We end with a quick overview of some of the program activities of the Aqqiumavvik Society to offer concrete examples of ways of going forward together.
