The “Matinamagewin – Le partage” training, offered since 2018 by the Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue (UQAT), aims to raise awareness among Quebec teaching staff on the importance of decolonization, and to promote the development of cultural security practises in the educational community.
In this active, interactive workshop, trainers from UQAT’s Continuing Education Department will guide participants on a journey of self-reflection, questioning and situating their own path towards cultural security. This activity will lead to the sharing of good practices that promote the well-being and success of Indigenous students. It will be an opportunity to value and promote Indigenous knowledge, worldview, culture and history (Competency 15). These exchanges will also enable the voices of Indigenous people involved in education to be heard, their knowledge to be passed on and, ultimately, develop the foundations of a community of practice engaged in a process of indigenization of teaching. Using an approach inspired by Indigenous pedagogy and Diane Campeau’s writings on place-based pedagogy, the workshop will lead participants to put down roots in their environment and use place as a source of learning and connection.
