Introduction: Sachiyo Kanzaki

Abstract: Japanese society, ranked 125th on the gender gap index, is currently undergoing major turmoil. In the world of entertainment, politics and so on, the reality of serious sexual assaults and violations of human rights have been revealed more than ever. Such distorted sense of sexuality has been involved in the history of sex trade in Japan. In this keynote lecture, I would like to introduce the history of the Shin-Yoshiwara red-light district in Edo and its influence on Japanese modern society.
