The Cree community of Waskaganish is an Indigenous community on the James Bay in Northern Quebec. Waskaganish is in an early stage of tourism development, however, there is much potential for tourism development due to the strength and representation of Cree culture and language. Tourism in Waskaganish has the potential to benefit the local economy and protect local culture and identity. Using key informant interviews, this study explores opportunities for tourism development in Waskaganish along with perceptions and attitudes of the local community towards tourism and highlights some of the barriers to formalized tourism development.
