The use of retired racehorses in tourism has attracted a great deal of attention because the overproduction and mass slaughter of racehorses have come under serious criticism in this Anthropocene era. In Japan, some people enjoy eating horse meat, which could be part of retired American racehorses slaughtered in Mexico and exported to Japan, while others are eager to safeguard retired racehorses by keeping them or retraining them for second careers. The responsible use of those retrained horses in tourism is crucial to the protection of animal rights and welfare. This paper examines several horse-related events and activities in which stakeholders are attempting to build a new world of people and horses.
