Roger Lavoie est architecte et urbaniste. Il a travaillé en pratique privée pour les firmes Leblond et Tremblay architectes, Thomas Robert Reiner architecte et André Hoffmann urbaniste. Dans le domaine public, il a travaillé  pour les villes de Montréal, Saint-Hyacinthe et Jonquière, fusionnée en 2002 pour constituer Saguenay. Il est aujourd’hui responsable du patrimoine architectural pour la Ville de Saguenay. Sa pratique porte plus particulièrement sur l’encadrement des interventions architecturales dans les secteurs patrimoniaux. Son approche privilégie l’accompagnement des citoyens dans leurs projets de rénovation. À cet égard, il a participé à la mise sur pied d’un programme d’aide-conseil à la rénovation patrimoniale offert gratuitement à la population  et à de nombreux programmes d’aide financière à la rénovation ou à la restauration des bâtiments patrimoniaux.
