Thomas Strickland is Assistant Professor in the School of Architecture, Laurentian University. He completed his PhD. in Architectural History and Theory at McGill University, was a fellow at the Canadian Centre for Architecture in 2009, and is an alumnus of the Health Care, Technology and Place, CIHR Strategic Research Initiative, University of Toronto. His current research builds along three streams: health and the built environment, subaltern place-making, and the post-industrial city. Ultimately, he is interested in the capacity for the built environment to be sustenance for human rights and a resource, spatial and otherwise, for social and cultural innovation. He is excited to be publishing a chapter, “Passive and Active: Public Space in McMaster Health Science Centre, 1972,” in the forthcoming publication, Healing Spaces, Modern Architecture and the Body, with Ashgate Press. He has also published in contemporary art and architectural periodicals, such as Canadian Architect,
Parachute, and On|Site Review. Strickland has designed for numerous award-winning architectural firms in Canada, is past president of the Visual Arts Weeks Society of Calgary, and is founding partner in the art and architecture research initiative, pouf !. For his work as a curator he has received grants from the Canada Council, the RAIC and the Calgary Foundation. Strickland’s work with the artists collective Points de Vue, was exhibited at the Darling Foundry in 2014. Currently he is curating an international artist residency with Jiwar Creació i Societat, Barcelona (Nov. - Dec. 2015), in which artists from Jordan, Mexico, and Spain explore divergent formations of home in the face of mass global migrations.
