My career focus had two branches, English Literature and Humanities. In English, my area of concentration was the Modernist novel in England and America. In the Humanities, my particular interest was the nature of the inmate experience in institutions such as asylums, prisons, hospitals and schools as depicted in film, fiction, memoir, documentary, and on television. This led eventually to an interest in institutional architecture, especially with respect to gaols/jails in pre-Confederation Canada.
