Ses travaux de recherche portent majoritairement sur les problématiques inscrites autour du développement/redéveloppement territorial confronté à des situations de crise. La réflexion centrale portée par des territoires en transformation en quête de nouvelle(s) identité(s) s’appuie sur deux objets principaux : tourisme-loisirs et culture-patrimoine.
La dialectique réversibilité-irréversibilité envisagée dans son caractère spatial et associée à la dialectique patrimoine/modernité est au centre des questions discutées autour des quatre axes de recherche qui fédèrent ses travaux :
- la question de la désindustrialisation et du développement/redéveloppement territorial ;
- celle du tourisme-loisirs au sein des projets de (re)développement ;
- les problématiques territoriales posées à partir du processus de patrimonialisation, avec pour appui initial la question du patrimoine industriel ;
- la régénérescence urbaine par la culture, avec pour appui le renouveau des questions muséales porté par le processus de métropolisation.
Edith Fagnoni est membre du laboratoire Médiations – Sciences des lieux-Sciences des liens de Sorbonne Université et membre associé de l’EIREST (Équipe Interdisciplinaire de REcherche Sur le Tourisme) de l’Université Paris1-Panthéon-Sorbonne qu’elle a codirigé jusqu’à fin 2015.
Elle préside depuis 2016 une des associations fondatrices de la discipline géographie, l’Association de Géographes Français (AGF).
