Avant d’arriver à l'Université de Montréal, elle compte à son actif une carrière de plus de trente-cinq ans dans un poste de direction dans le domaine du patrimoine à Parcs Canada. En tant que directeur général des Lieux historiques nationaux, elle a assuré l'orientation nationale du volet « lieux patrimoniaux du Canada », notamment en matière de conservation du patrimoine et de programmes éducatifs. Elle a aussi occupé le poste de Secrétaire de la Commission des lieux et monuments historiques du Canada entre 1986 et 2005. Chef de la délégation du Canada au Comité du patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO depuis 1990, elle y a été activement impliquée à titre de présidente (1990, 2008), rapporteur (1989) en plus de présider plusieurs réunions d'experts internationaux.
