Canal: Walking the Post-Industrial Lachine Canal (COHDS, 2013 - bilingual) is an audio-walk and booklet that takes listeners from the Atwater Market to the Saint Gabriel Lock, exploring the post-industrial transformation of a once heavily industrialized area. The Lachine Canal area has undergone dramatic changes, as mills and factories were closed and then demolished or converted into high-end condominiums. The adjoining working-class neighbourhoods were devastated by deindustrialization, losing half of their population between 1961 and 1991. Our audio walk and booklet aimed to make visible some of these absences and divides, contributing to a wider discussion about the politics of urban change. Over the course of the walk, you will hear stories from those who worked or lived alongside the canal. You can download the audio walk at www.postindustrialmontreal.ca or use one of our mp3 players. Preregistration is required.
