Henry Markovits
My colleagues and I study the processes underlying inferences that people make in several different contexts. The basic hypothesis guiding these studies is the idea that inferences are supported by the construction of internal mental models that synthesize people's experiences and knowledge. Two domains are being studied: logical reasoning with conditionals and social reasoning. Our most recent work has examined the relation between reasoning style as instantiated with the dual strategy model and different forms of inference, including judgments about emotions and biases and gender difference in social representations (with Joyce Benenson). Developmental work has examined the developmental trajectory of conditional (if-then) reasoning.
