Biographical notice:
Tessa Pijnaker is a graduate student at the Free University of Amsterdam (VU), finishing her master’s degree in History. In 2015 she obtained her research master’s degree in Social Sciences at the University of Amsterdam (UvA). Throughout her studies, she has sought to combine anthropological and historical approaches. Her research interests focus on the historical development of the African middle classes, African heritage and technological developments. For her thesis for the research master Social Sciences, she studied the connections between African heritage, game development and the aspirations of middle-class tech entrepreneurs in Accra, Ghana. She conducted five months of ethnographic fieldwork, during which she did an internship at a game development company and forty life history interviews. For her thesis for the master’s in History, she used UNESCO’s General History of Africa and connected Women in African History: an E-learning tool as case studies to investigate the historical representation of the African subject in a postcolonial context.
