As an important part of urban civilization, water industry heritage is a dynamic and complex system with very specific characteristics. They are historical witnesses of mankind overcoming resource, environmental, and health crises. Water industry heritage are mostly adjacent to the water source, and some are parts of the historical water systems, which makes them vulnerable to natural disasters such as heavy rains, floods, and hurricanes. Some of them are still working as parts of the water conservancy or transportation systems. As living heritage, they are diverse in scale and highly sensitive to the environment, which increases the difficulty of maintenance and protection. Therefore, scientific protection methods are more suitable for this type of heritage. Low cost preventive protection measures should be used to enhance the defensive capacity of the historical area where water industrial heritage is located and reduce the vulnerability under the influence of climate change or other natural disasters.
The Yangtze River Delta region is rich in natural water systems, also has a long economic and cultural history and abundant water-related heritage resources. Although some historical sites have been listed as provincial or national cultural relics, the conservation actions usually stop here. In fact, the census of heritage, incorporation or rating of heritage protection should not be the end of protection action, but the new beginning.
Inspired by the TICCIH's advocacy of special research on water industry heritage in 2019, and based on the census results of water cultural heritage by the Ministry of Water Resources of China, this research starts from the practical problems of water industry heritage preventive protection. Aiming at the characteristics of the location, scale, and protection status of the water industry heritage in the Yangtze River Delta, this paper proposes an interdisciplinary method and technical route for the protection of such heritage, dedicates to exploring the key techniques for intelligent protection.
The objectives include three points: firstly, to show the impacts of climate, environmental changes and related risks on water heritage heritage; secondly, to provide long-term and short-term multi-dimensional early warning of potential risks the heritage faced; thirdly, to determine the conditions for technology transplantation to promote the Artificial Intelligence(AI) method used in more fields of heritage protection. This paper attempts to give answers to technologies and methods to key scientific questions in data acquisition and utilization, predictive model establishment, and intelligent protection mechanisms for water industry heritage. It shows a new idea of “data-driven preventive protection” for heritage protection practice. The proposed methods are technologically portable and helpful for promoting the technological transformation of heritage protection from passive restoration to active prevention.
