Patrimoine industriel et photographie entretiennent des relations étroites. La photographie constitue une source de l’archéologie industrielle. Elle permet d’éclairer les liens entre les hommes, leurs outils, leurs machines et leurs lieux de travail. Elle est également, une fois l’activité industrielle terminée, un outil de documentation et d’étude des sites. Mais bien au-delà, saisie par des artistes capables de transcender les représentations communes, conférant aux vestiges industriels la laideur d’une époque que l’on voulait révolue, la photographie a permis de révéler la force esthétique et d'amorcer ainsi la patrimonialisation d’objets et de bâtiments délaissés. Ce faisant, en évacuant les souvenirs des dominations et des luttes, la photographie fait courir le risque d’une fétichisation d’un patrimoine réduit à ses dimensions plastiques. Ce sont ces différentes perspectives que l’atelier cherche à explorer

Few years after closure (1989) of the coalmine in Beringen, all constructions remaining were protected as "Historical Monument". Since legal protection was adopted (in 1994) this coalmine is the only one of the flemish basin (Province of Limburg) to be integrally protected.
