Dr Géraldine Chatelard

Dr Géraldine Chatelard is Associate Researcher at the Institut français du Proche-Orient (Ifpo) in Amman, Jordan. A social historian and anthropologist of the contemporary Middle East, she obtaine a doctoral degree from the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (Paris) in 2000. Her work, published under the title Briser la mosaïque (Paris, CNRS Éditions, 2004) retraced and analysed the interplay between tribal, confessional and national identity building among Christians in modern Jordan. She is currently researching population displacement in the Middle East, together with the practices and politics of heritage in Iraq.  She recently published "Quelques réflexions sur les traitements récents du patrimoine irakien," Les Cahiers de l'Orient (Winter 2015), and "Diversity Under Attack", World Heritage, special issue on heritage in Iraq (June 2015). She also co-edited Najaf: History and Contemporary Developments of a Sacred City (under press, Unesco and Ithaca Press). Between 2011 et 2014, she was Culture Programme Specialist with UNESCO Office for Iraq, and has been involved in several projects dealing with World Heritage and intangible cultural heritage in the Middle East and North Africa.
